Hurricane season is upon us and many of you are well prepared for the hurricane and any other extreme weather events we may face here in Hawaii. For those who haven’t experienced a hurricane, we wanted to share some tips on emergency preparedness for your property.
- Despite popular advice, it is not recommended that tape your windows.
- If your property doesn’t have hurricane shutters, it is suggested that you board them up with plywood to prevent flying objects from breaking through; also cover sliding doors.
o Stay away from uncovered windows during a storm.
o Here are tips on how to board up windows. Bring all outdoor items such as outdoor furniture, toys, and garbage bins, etc inside. Strap down large items if there is no indoor storage. - Strap down the roof with hurricane clips.
- Put bolts on the tops and bottoms of doors.
- Caulk around doors and windows to prevent rain getting in any openings.
- Test pumps and drains and have extra batteries on hand.
- Clear drain pipes and gutters.
- Trim trees and shrubs and tie down the small ones.
- If you have unhealthy trees, considering having them evaluated by an arborist and possibly cut down before the storm to prevent uprooting and damage.
- Turn off propane tanks and unplug small appliances.
- Take pictures or video of your property for insurance documentation.
- Review your insurance coverage; it may not protect against flooding.
